Is My Phone Unlocked? How to Check in 2 Minutes
Three fast ways to check whether your phone is carrier locked or unlocked — on iPhone, on Android, and with a spare SIM — plus what to do if it is locked.
Before you switch carriers, you need one answer: is your phone unlocked? Here are three checks that take about two minutes total.
Method 1: Check your phone settings
- iPhone — open Settings, tap General, tap About, and scroll to Carrier Lock. 'No SIM restrictions' means you are unlocked.
- Android — open Settings, tap Network & internet or Connections, then look for SIM lock or Carrier settings. Wording varies by manufacturer.
Method 2: Try another carrier's SIM
Power the phone off, insert a SIM from a different carrier, and power back on. If the phone finds service and lets you make a call, it is unlocked. If you see a message asking for an unlock code or saying the SIM is not supported, it is locked.
Method 3: Check your IMEI
Dial *#06# to display your IMEI, or find it under Settings, About. An IMEI check against the device database will tell you the lock status, the original carrier, and whether the device is clean or blacklisted — useful if you are buying a used phone.
